Happy Valentine’s Day

Psyche Awakened by Eros (1787-93) Marble, Louvre. By Antonio Canova

Many of you who’ve worked with me know that my passion is art. I studied art history, I paint, I draw, I carve rocks. The above stone sculpture is one of my favorites. Here’s the mythology behind these two lovely figures of Cupid/Eros and Psyche.  – renée

There were once a king and queen who had three very beautiful daughters. Psyche, the youngest and most beautiful, was treated like a goddess by the local people.

Jealous and infuriated, Venus, goddess of Beauty, ordered her son Cupid to avenge her by making Psyche enamored of the lowest of all human beings. But Cupid fell hopelessly in love with the mortal girl. Psyche’s father, in despair at seeing his daughter unmarried despite her beauty, consulted the oracle of Miletus. The oracle predicted terrible disasters if the girl were not abandoned at once on a rock, where a monster would carry her off.

Alone and trembling on the rock, Psyche suddenly felt the caress of a light breeze: this signaled the coming of Zephyr, the gentle west wind. He bore her away to a marble palace covered with precious stones, which would now be her home.

Each night a mysterious visitor came to Psyche’s room and made love to her. But he forbade her to try to see his face.

Psyche, curious to see her lover’s face, lit her oil lamp one night as he slept and saw that he was none other than the god of Love. But a drop of burning oil suddenly woke him; and feeling betrayed, he fled.

Desperate, Psyche set out in search of her lost love. Venus inflicted terrible ordeals on her, leading her from the Underworld to Olympus. For the last of these ordeals, Venus sent Psyche to Proserpina, goddess of the Underworld, ordering her to bring back a flask she should open under no circumstances. But Psyche was curious, and opened the flask. Inhaling the vapors, she fell into a deathly sleep. Cupid revived her by touching her with his arrow. Moved by such devotion, the gods finally granted Cupid Psyche’s hand. They gave her nectar and ambrosia, and this made her immortal. They then consecrated her goddess of the Soul.

Community Service Day Friday, June 3rd, 2016CSD VolunteerBadge

What is Community Service Day?

Each year, Windermere Real Estate agents, managers, owners and staff from 300 offices across the Western United States gather together and devote their workday to making a positive change in the neighborhoods they serve through local service projects and volunteerism.

This year, Windermere's Greenwood brokers and staff assisted the Phinney Neighborhood Association Senior Center with sprucing up yards, weeding flower beds, and trimming overgrowth for several seniors in the Greenwood neighborhood.

Windermere’s Community Service Day was established in 1984 to offer agents and staff a chance to volunteer an entire workday to give back to the neighborhoods in which they live and work.  Windermere’s Community Service Day has been recognized nationally as a model hands-on volunteer program and has been adopted by other real estate companies and businesses around the country.

2nd Half 2015 Property Taxes Due

 Property Taxes Due

Property Taxes Due

King County residents who pay their property taxes themselves, rather than through their mortgage lender, should circle Halloween (Saturday, October 31st) on their calendar. The second half of 2015 property taxes are due on that date.

After November 2nd, interest charges and penalties will be added to the tax bill. To make the process easier, King County provides several ways for property owners to pay their taxes quickly and conveniently.

Tax payments can be made:

  • By mail if postmarked no later than November 2, 2015. Taxpayers should include their tax statement and write the property tax account number on their check or money order. Cash should never be sent through the mail.
  • Online using King County’s convenient, secure online eTax application. Taxpayers may pay accounts with a credit card or an electronic debit from a checking account called an “eCheck.”
  • In person by Friday, October 30th at the King County Administration Building, Suite 600 – Treasury Operations, located at 500 Fourth Ave. in Seattle. Treasury Operations is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • At King County Community Service Centers if paid by check for the exact amount due. Taxpayers can find the address, phone number, and operating hours of the center in their area by visiting www.kingcounty.gov/CSC.

The online option provides immediate payment confirmation for current year or delinquent year(s) property tax bills. To pay online or view property tax information, taxpayers can visit www.kingcounty.gov/propertytax.

For questions about missing tax statements or other tax payment information, contact King County Treasury Operations online or by calling (206) 296-0923.

Information on senior citizen exemption and deferral programs can be obtained from the King County Assessor’s Office by calling (206) 296-3920.
